Lakes that are frozen solid almost every day of the year. Some parts of the ice aren't as thick as others and can shatter if too much weight is placed on the surface. Most of it, however, is completely frozen, able to stand thousands of pounds of pressure.
Also, surrounding each lake will be a field of whatever vegetation is able to survive in these conditions.
